My Studio Classes

Join my independent classes at Livewell Southsea, Coastguard Studio or

SPC Studio, in Osbourne Road throughout the week for small, intimate and friendly group classes, or find me at Hotspot Yoga and Raverlin Sports Centre for larger group studio sessions.

My small, intimate studio classes are filled with chilled vibes and a super modern approach to wellness. Radiating an secure environment free from the crowds, cliques and intimidation you often find in larger gyms and yoga studios.

This is a great starting point for anyone looking to start their yoga journey in a friendly relaxed environment.

When I first attended in-person yoga classes and yoga studios in Portsmouth, they just didn’t match up with my vision of how they should’ve been. I found them uninspiring, disconnected, boring, unwelcoming, unrelatable. And, I thought, if I was having that experience, surely there were others who were, too...

So I decided if I couldn’t find classes that radiate pure happiness, I'd teach them myself! Classes that removed the barriers of expense, dogma and the spiritual hype that’s often found in the yoga world.

Classes that were welcoming, unpretentious, accepting and playful.

And so Yoga by Emily was born. It’s become a movement from what yoga’s classically been to what it can be.

It’s yoga, just more fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where is your Yoga Studio Based?
I work from a small, independant wellness studio, Livewell Southsea - based in 1 St Vincent Rd, Southsea, Portsmouth, Southsea PO5 2QR . I teach all my private 1-1 classes here along with burnout recovery sessions and small, friendly group classes throughout the week. All my own classes either outdoors or at Livewell Southsea can be booked directly through my website, and are included within my membership packages. Alongside my own classes, I also work from larger Gym's and Studios within Portsmouth such as Hotspot Yoga, and The University of Portsmouth Raverlin Sports Centre. These larger gym classes can be booked directly with the gym or studio. Please note; these classes are not included within Yoga By Emily Memberships. Take a look at my schedule page to find a yoga class which is right for you. Throughout the summer you can often find me flowing on Southsea Common or on Southsea Beach hosting one of many outdoor yoga and mindfulness classes.
  • I've never practiced yoga before, do you offer beginners yoga?
All my classes are for mixed abilities and can be fully adapted and modified to your level. Yoga is a practice not a performance. No one is expecting perfection, and trust me we all wobble, we all fall over but we simply laugh it off and try again. Private 1-1 or Private Group classes are available if you'd prefer to learn the basics in a smaller, private setting or I recommend starting with my small group classes. Each class is small, bespoke and friendly, with a maximum of 4-5 students per class. This will really allow growth in your yoga practice, you can learn, develop and expand your yoga knowledge in a friendly and relaxed environment which can often feel lost in larger group gym classes and allows me to provide hands on and bespoke support to each student, without you as a student becoming another face in a busy crowded group setting. Unsure where to begin? You can also enjoy my Studio Starter Package which includes 1 x private 1-1 yoga class to learn the basics of breathwork, the asanas (poses) and meditation before enjoying 4 x small group classes of your choice to help find your flow.
  • What classes does your membership include?
Yoga by Emily membership, provides you with something a little different, and a more local, friendly alternative to larger studio and gym environments. This will really allow growth in your yoga practice, you can learn, develop and expand your yoga knowledge in a friendly and relaxed environment which can often feel lost in larger group gym classes. This means I have just 20 memberships available for the entire studio. As part of the studio experience I wanted to create a space that goes beyond just another yoga class or community space, therefore there will also be a ton of added perks and benefits for studio members, such as: Members only Workshops and Events With the sell-out success of Yoga and Brunches, and Sky High Yoga at the Spinnaker Tower events, I LOVE how my community is growing but at the same time I don’t want to forget or leave behind all those of you who have been with me since the beginning or my regular members. Therefore each month I will host Members only discounted events and workshops, whether it’s our own private brunch at the queens, new forest sauna days, overnight retreats or half day retreats. These will only be open to Yoga by Emily Members who have a subscription to the studio or online classes, to ensure we cultivate and nurture our incredible little community. The perfect monthly treat to reset and realign from the stresses of work and life! Free Bring a Friend Pass ...And my favourite benefit for Studio members is being able to share the yoga love and bring a friend once a month to a studio class with all in-studio memberships. Bring your mum, your best mate, your partner or even your work colleague or client who had a really shitty week, give them the gift of yoga and get them on-board!
  • As a beginner, which style of yoga should I start with?
The first question I always ask when I’m asked this question is what are your goals and reasons for starting yoga? All yoga classes will aid your mental heath and mobility, but it’s best to help yourself and choose a class which is the right fit for you. For example, if you have a busy overactive brain it’s usually a good choice to start with a faster flow as you’re moving so quickly and following the breath you’ll have little time to get distracted, in Vinyasa and Power yoga you are both increasing flexibility and strength, and these classes can be more of a work out. Similarly, if you are looking to "feel the burn" and have more of a dynamic class in mind, Power Yoga or Power to Yin Yoga is a great style however these are a little fast paced if you're still learning the basics, therefore I would recommend starting with my Beginners Ashtanga Yoga to prepare for these classes. If you’re looking to rest, recoup and aid burn out or stress a slower practice like Yin or Restorative Yoga would be a perfect fit. If you’re looking to increase flexibility & mobility then I would recommend Yin. If you’re not sure, or perhaps want a mixture of strength, flexibility while also getting those mental health benefits then I recommend starting with Vinyasa yoga , and from here you can decide if you want to go a little faster and try power flow or slow it down and try yin. All my classes incorporate breath-work, and finish with a relaxing meditation you just need to choose which speed you'd like to try. It’s important to remember to listen to your body and adjust your practice when you need to, some weeks you may need to get that body moving a try a fast class, but sometimes we just need to slow it right down.
  • What are the benefits of Yoga?
Practising yoga comes with a ton of physical and mental benefits, and depending on the style of yoga will increase each specific benefit. Faster classes like Power Yoga creates a flexible, toned and strong body and improves breathing, energy and metabolism. Yoga, meditation and mindfulness makes you happier, more balanced and emotionally calmer. Some practices like Yin Yoga, will reduce your cortisol levels, which is your stress hormone, helping you relax and recover from burn out. The mindful benefits of yoga are also key: Yoga teaches you to be aware of what is going on inside and outside of you. Yoga teaches you to be present in your surroundings and open to what is all around, the more you practice the more you will begin to notice this mindful mindset in your everyday life. You will feel some benefits immediately, such as the release of physical tension, the body opening and muscles strengthening – the “feel good” factor that keeps people hooked on yoga. Other benefits depend on how much you practice and every person is different. But most people will feel a positive change after a few weeks, if not before.
  • How often should I practice Yoga?
Would you visit the gym once and expect a 6 pack? The principal yoga is exactly the same, it takes dedication, consistency and patience. We can practice yoga our entire lives so there’s no rush, just go with the flow and trust the process. Even if you practice once a week, you’ll feel the difference. If you can, try to practice two to three times a week but don’t let unrealistic expectations stop you from doing shorter practices. 10 or 20 minutes is better than doing nothing at all, whether that's online, in person or even a simple youtube video. In short, do what you can, when you can. Focus on, and be proud of what you do, rather than focusing on what you think you should be doing.
