Starting Yoga - Frequently Asked Questions

Updated: May 22, 2022

1. All my classes welcome newcomers, from beginners on-wards,no matter what your level of fitness and mobility, experience or body type. Simply choose a class time that suits you and simply let the teacher know if you are a beginner and about any health issues or injuries before the class starts. You are welcome to message/email and chat first. If you want to get in touch first to discuss if the class is suitable, feel free to get in touch. 2. All my in-person classes are small so I can ensure you get the instruction you need to get started enjoyably and safely. I will add layers of instruction, techniques and suitable challenges when you feel ready and you are always encouraged to work at your own pace. 3. There are no requirements for physical ability - I can adapt the practice to anyone who wants to learn. If your unsure, get in touch, it might be that a 121 lesson is a better starting point for you. 4. Do I need to book? Drop-ins are always welcome in group classes and you do not need to subscribe to join classes, you can simply book for the class online for a one-off. In Private and Semi-Private classes booking is required to ensure the time-slot and space is free.

5. What should I wear? Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. No special outfits are needed. If you're joining me for a Yin or Restorative Class I encourage my students to wear fluffy socks and even your pjs! 6. When should I arrive? For both digital and in-person classes please aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of the yoga class, especially if it is your first class or if its a digital class to ensure your software is working.

If you are late for a class your scheduled booking slot will remain the same and the class will take place with the remaining time left however no refunds will be given for the missed time. Life happens and we all run late and need to reschedule appointments however the cancellation policy will apply if you choose to cancel a class within 24 hours of the booking. 7. Do I need to come each week? Coming weekly and getting to know your teacher and their teaching style is an ideal way to gain familiarity with the movements and ways of practicing. At least weekly practice is recommended. 8. How should I pay? Book online through our booking system or directly to the teacher if you are attending an in-studio class. 9. What if I have an injury or health issue? If you have any health concerns or injuries yoga can be very helpful when carefully practiced. Sometimes modification of the practices is required to ensure it is safe. I am experienced at working with a wide range of health issues. If your unsure, please chat to the yoga teacher in advance of coming. At Yoga By Emily, health limitations can be accommodated as long as I know about them in advance and can make the time to work with you. Sometimes a group class isn't an ideal starting point and private lessons might be recommended initially. Or a quieter class where we can work with you more individually. This would help get you started with your practice and explore ways of moving and practicing that suit you. 10. Creating a Yoga Space Please turn off all phones or put them on do-not-disturb (no sound and not on vibrate). Music and/or podcasts will be played in all classes, if you have a preference and have booked a private yoga class please contact me in advance to discuss this.

I ALWAYS encourage the use of props in my classes, including blocks, blankets, pillows and straps.
