The Thursday Night Yin Club

Updated: May 29, 2022

You may be asking yourself, what actually is this Thursday Night Yin Club, Where is it, and what even is Yin Yoga?

Whether you're a Portsmouth and Southsea local, based in Hampshire or anywhere in the UK or even a yogi from across the world. You can join!

Every Thursday Night, you can be a part of this amazing, positive community, making time for yourself and practicing yoga with like-minded souls from across the world! There's something really special about a global community practice, especially with all the turmoil and chaos happening around the world at the moment, its amazing to be able to connect and join one-another finding peace and kindness on your mat.

1. What is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles. The practice is completely floor based and poses are held for 3-5 minutes each. The sequences of postures are meant to stimulate the channels of the subtle body known as meridians in Chinese medicine.

Yin Yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body—the tendons, fasciae, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. It is a more meditative approach to yoga, its goals are awareness and mindfulness of the body and mind.

2. What are the benefits of Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga is an ideal class to help develop mindfulness while reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It is my number 1, go to class for anyone who suffers with their mental health as Yin Yoga works with the parasympathetic nervous system, to reduce cortisol levels (our stress hormone) and take us out of the fight or flight mode we after often situated in.

Yin yoga may also help to:

  • balance emotions

  • improve flexibility

  • stretch connective tissue

  • boost circulation

  • improve sleep

  • enhance mental focus

  • promote relaxation

  • develop breath awareness

  • heal injuries

3. Who is the class for?

A yin yoga practice is a great addition to any yoga, fitness, or healthy lifestyle routine but in short it is for everyone! Everyone has mental health just as we all have physical health and Yin Yoga is an ideal practice to improve upon and work on both areas in one session. Trust me, no one ever leaves a yin yoga class saying "I didn't need that.."

This slow, gentle form of yoga is the perfect complement to a hectic, fast-paced life or intense workouts, making it an ideal recovery session. Whether you're a runner, an avid gym rat, footballer, rugby player, tennis player etc etc the list is endless - yin yoga will help you rest and recover those achy muscles.

If you struggle with mobility, flexibility or have restricted movements or a disability we can make adjustments for you such as modifications to poses using props, or alternative postures, and you will get just as much from the class, if not more.

4. Where is the class held?

The Thursday Night Yin Club, is (as you may have guessed) every Thursday Night live on Google Meets. Keep your camera on or off, there is absolutely no requirement to share your practice, i want you to feel super comfortable and enjoy your time to yourself.

As we have students from various different time-zones in the community, for some its a late night practice, to make them feel super sleepy and zen before bed and for some its a post-work de-stress practice.

As the class is online you can take your phone, tablet or laptop wherever suits you to practice. Whether that's your front room, study, garden or bedroom. That's right Yin Yoga can even be practiced from the comfort of your bed for a super sleepy relaxing class.

4. What makes the Yin Club different to another online studio?

The Thursday Night Yin Club, is all about incorporating an hour of Yoga and Mindfulness into your week. Its about making time for yourself and noticing the small subtle differences in your body each week, while reflecting on the craziness of life and welcoming some positivity and gratitude into our busy lives.

1. Community Feed

Each week we share a beautiful, unique practice with the class and to continue this beautiful community you have the opportunity to connect more, and make life-long friends with either locals you would never have met in day to day life or with yogis from across the world. The community feed is a great way to share how you found the practice, share photos, yummy recipes or little yoga milestones with the community, while being supported and offering you the opportunity to talk about the world of yoga with like-minded individuals.

It's also a great way to stay updated with class themes, events and exclusive Yoga by Emily Community Discounts and deals.

2. Discounts & Deals

I am so lucky to work with an amazing collection of independent suppliers both local to Portsmouth and online to offer a variety of exclusive Yoga by Emily discounts. From Sports Massages, to Yoga Equipment, Crystals, Wax Melts and Candles the discount area ensures you can deepen your yoga practice and create the ultimate studio vibe at home.

3. Exclusive Playlists & Blog Posts

If you've practiced with me before you know music is SO important in my classes, and I want you to create your own atmosphere and setting for each thursday night class. Whether you're listening to a podcast, your favourite tracks or some soothing ASMR the decision is yours, but you do have access to all my handcrafted playlists to help carry you off into a dreamy yoga state, along with a whole bunch of private yoga blog posts specifically for my community.

4. Online Journal Area

This is without doubt my favourite area of the membership page, the personal online journal area. You have access to your own customisable profile, where i encourage you to journal after each practice. Either by logging on via Safari or by downloading the Yoga by Emily App, I invite you to just use this page to reflect on each practice, whether that's a few simple words, a photo or as many paragraphs as you feels right. Throughout the week and at the end of each practice i will give you journal prompts to guide you and give you some inspiration and before you know you you will be able to look back and see both improvement, clarity and mindfulness as you undertake your wellness journey.
