As it's International Yoga Day, I wanted to take a minute to share how yoga and movement has impacted my life.
Whether its the influence on my career or how I live my life, movement has touched our community in ways that we're still discovering.
A Note From Emily
Yoga and movement have undoubtably touched every aspect of my life, and sitting down to write this made me realise how far it has reached into my routine, relationships, lifestyle and the way I view myself and my body.
Its not just our time on the mat that comprises our practice its how we show up to the world. Presence. Feeling. Awareness. Consciousness. How we show up with love.
When I tell people I am a yoga teacher, more often than not I get the response ‘I need to do more yoga’ or ‘I can’t do yoga, and this usually has something to do with “not being flexible or good enough”.
Yes, stretching & the poses are an amazing part of the yoga practice. On the mat we can build strength, flexibility, physical mastery and mobility through the asana. We can build resilience and ease through the challenges. We can connect with our breath and our body. We can feel into the shifts, feel into the emotions and blockages and witness them moving and releasing. We can witness our bodies changing over time.
BUT it’s the integration of all this work OFF the mat that I’m most interested in. How I show up for myself, my friends and family as a whole person. How I show up to my work and how I relate to my environment and the community within it.
Its not at all something I have nailed by any means. But its not a destination. It is a journey, a process and most of all always a practice.
We are not aiming for perfection, no matter what Instagram says. Showing up, wobbles and all, and working with what we have got.
And this change in ethos and perspective on life has come from the people that I see everyday at the studio, practice with, and teach. YOU GUYS.. our community is continually inspiring me to find a rhythm and practice that works for me. Safe to say, I would be an incredibly different (and grumpier) person if I hadn't found yoga.
